While holidaying in Matakohe you can explore New Zealands largest harbour - 3500 kilometers around the shore line - an amazing water way reaching from Auckland in the south to Whangarei in the north.
Once a great sailing ship harbour with the notorious grave yard sand banks at the entrance, nowadays Kaipara Harbour is a popular recreational harbour.
If you have a boat, Matakohe is central to three ramps; Tinopai, Ruawai and Pahi. There is good fishing over summer and choices of upper and outer water ways.
For those with kayak’s there is an abundance of tidal esturies and creeks to explore, and everyone can enjoy the swimming and walking beaches.
You can go sightseeing from many vantage points: Take the Tinopai scenic drive or Climb Tokatoka Peak and view the muddy Northern Wairoa River snaking through the country side. For the more adventurous take a helicopter ride and behold the harbour's size from the air.
Or, there's nothing like finding a quiet spot and relaxing.
Head back to our Matakohe accommodation after a long day exploring the beautiful Kaipara Harbour. Our clean, cosy, well-kept accommodation is the perfect place to rest after an exciting day!
